What the equinox means

Equinoxes happen when the Sun crosses the celestial equator and enters Aries or Libra: the one moment of the year when day and night last (almost) exactly the same everywhere on the planet. Astrologically these are two of the four cardinal points that define the tropical zodiac — Ptolemy already places the start of Aries at the spring equinox in the Tetrabiblos (Book I), and the whole zodiac wheel has been measured from there ever since.
